Young Leaders from West Wiltshire brave the weather to train as officials
13 February 2012

21 students from West Wiltshire braved the snow and icy temperature to spend the day training to become young officials. The students from St Laurence, Kingdown, John of Gaunt, Matravers and St Augustine’s school were selected as part of the build-up to the new Level 3 School Games in Wiltshire. Along with other sports, QuadKids has been selected to be part of the games.

It wasn’t exactly athletics weather with snow falling the night before but it didn’t deter the 21 pupils from fully taking part in the day. The students spent the morning learning about QuadKids and how to help officiate at QuadKids events looking specifically at the four events; the run, jog, jump and vortex throw. They also had a little practice in the classroom to practice areas such as measuring, time keeping, writing down results and using the scoring spreadsheet.

After lunch, the students braved the snow and cold weather to fully practice what they had learnt in the morning. They acted as officials and participants so they could run a mock event before uploading their results onto the scoring spreadsheet.

The students are now fully equipped with the knowledge and experience to help out at the many events that West Wiltshire will be holding this year leading up to the Level 3 Wiltshire School Games. Daniel Murphy, Wiltshire QK Coordinator and trainer for the day was delighted with the enthusiasm and hard work of the students throughout the day, despite the weather, and is confident that the students can now go and support the many events that West Wiltshire will hold in 2012.
